HISTORY
The history of Kern Hospital technically began
in 1973, and at that time, Kern already had a legacy. Thus,
an understanding must be provided of events which laid the
foundation for Kern's mission. In June, 1956, Civic Hospital,
the pioneer institution specifically limited to foot surgery,
was opened in Detroit. The Hospital was opened under the
guidance and direction of its founder and Chief of Staff, Earl
G. Kaplan, D.P.M.
At that time, there were no institutions
dedicated to foot care in which a patient could be
hospitalized anywhere in the country. Almost two thousand
podiatrists from all over America enrolled in post-graduate
courses in foot surgery which were offered at Civic. As a
result, the Hospital became known as "the home of foot
surgery". Civic was the fulfillment of an ideal, of a dream,
and of a need. It was devoted to excellence in the surgical
management of foot conditions, but more importantly, it
contributed to the overall development, improvement and
refinement of basic Podiatric surgical practice throughout the
country and provided the first surgical residency training
program in the profession of Podiatry.
Along with the opening of the Hospital, the
first resident training program in the profession was
instituted as a six month post-graduate experience for one
Podiatrist. As the volume of activity in the Hospital grew it
became obvious that the number of residents had to be
increased. Soon the program was expanded so that four
residents participated in a six month program each year. This
developed into a nine month experience in response to various
States' licensure requirements and then into a one year
program with four residents beginning each July and four more
each January, each serving a full year of training. The
program developed individual lectures in all facets of the
delivery of podiatric surgical care. It provided hours of
discussions, assistance at surgery, management and follow-up
care of patients. A full service podiatric clinic was also
maintained within the institution. All of this was performed
under the close supervision of designated staff members.
The residents were provided a well-rounded
intensive training which was recognized then, and continues to
be appreciated now, as one of the most outstanding
post-graduate educational programs ever developed in the
profession. The tie to the Hospital for these residents
continues unbroken as the Civic/Kern Hospital Residents Alumni
Association continues to meet annually in a spirit of
fraternity to promote further study of their ever increasing
store of knowledge and experience while fostering a continuing
dedication to the profession of podiatry.
On September 23, 1973, Kern Hospital opened its
doors. The central goal of the Hospital continued to be the
education of podiatry residents. Soon the program expanded
from one year to two, and has maintained continuous approval
by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education of the American
Podiatric Medical Association as a Podiatric Surgical
Residency of 24 months duration. As many as fourteen
residents a year have been enrolled in the Kern program which
continues to make substantial contributions to the profession
and is recognized for its educational excellence by
Podiatrists everywhere.
Based on the Hospital's mission and goals
statement, the Administration continues its focus on efforts
to assist Podiatrists in all phases of the evaluation and
treatment of conditions in the human foot. The Hospital
strives to provide a forum for the education of podiatrists
and fosters leadership in all aspects of the profession of
Podiatry, Medicine and in the provision of care to an
expanding array of surgical patients. The history continues
to unfold as the organization looks forward to new and
creative ways to achieve the goals for which so many have
dedicated their lives, their fortunes and their personal and
professional aspirations.
In 2003, the Hospital was purchased by National
Surgical Hospitals and re-named Southeast Michigan Surgical
Hospital. Southeast Michigan Surgical Hospital currently
offers a PSR-24 and has converted to a PM & S-36 program
which specializes in diabetic foot care, forefoot surgery and
reconstructive rearfoot surgery. The program accepts five new
residents annually. The podiatric program at Southeast
Michigan Surgical Hospital affords excellent clinical and
surgical training which includes complete peri-operative
management and follow-up care. There is an active podiatric
clinic on-site. The medical rotations required during the
training period are at Sinai-Grace Hospital (Detroit Medical
Center) and St. John Oakland Hospital. The three year
program offers advanced wound care and surgical training to
maintain Southeast Michigan Surgical Hospital’s status as one
of the finest residency programs in the country.
